RPX: Easier sign-in for your website.
19 March 2009Some time ago, JanRain launched a WordPress plugin for their RPX product. It looked simple enough, so I thought I would try it out. The instructions on the plugin site seemed pretty straightforward:
- Copy the
rpxdirectory and its contents to your/wp-content/plugins/directory.- Activate the rpx plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
- Visit the RPX configuration page by going to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Options,’ and follow the instructions to finish your installation. If you don’t already have an RPX account and API key, you may click the “Get an RPX API Key” button to kick off the automatic configuation of your wordpress installation. If you have already created an RPX account and site for your WordPress blog, just past your API Key into the box and click “Save.” That’s it!
So I followed them.
I didn’t already have an RPX account and API key, so I clicked the “Get an RPX API Key” button, which did, in fact, kick off the automatic configuation of my wordpress installation. I had to verify my e-mail address, after which it sent me a confirmation e-mail that contained a link that I needed to follow in order to complete to acquisition of the key, but that was it.
Everything went smoothly and exactly as advertised, and now I’m the proud owner of bright and shiny new RPX WordPress plugin. All I need to do now is to press that big red “That was easy” button!

I’m not sure what could be causing the issue that has been reported by both ekram.syed and cuytherock … mine worked first time, right out of the box and I have never had any problems with it since. My suggestion would be to take that up with the folks over at JanRain. Since they built the plugin, they are probably the best source for addressing those types of issues, and may already be aware of that behavior and know what can be done about it.
